Joanna Newsom @ Treasure Island

JOANNA NEWSOM AND WILD BELLE ADDED TO SUNDAY LINEUP

We are thrilled to announce the additions of Joanna Newsom and Wild Belle to the Sunday lineup. Newsom, a native to northern California, very rarely plays at festivals, and has played only a handful of shows in 2012, making her a must-see at this year’s festival. The inclusion of up-and-comers Wild Belle on the Sunday bill solidifies our reputation as *the* place to hear the very best in music right now.

“Spektor’s first new studio album in three years, What We Saw From the Cheap Seats finds her scattering in several directions without losing sight of the sweet melodies that make her so accessible.” —NPR “All Songs Considered ‘First Listen’”
“Regina Spektor has become her generation’s Joni Mitchell—a singer-songwriter who nail-guns emotional trusts between wisecracks.” —Rolling Stone
“A set of beguiling originals abounding with hooks, humanity and endearing quirks.” —The Washington Post
“A singular songwriting voice that spans genres and personas with grace and apparent ease.” —NPR Music
“There’s not a weak track on the record, and there’s something arresting in each song, from the dramatic Thomas Dolby-style electronic drum sound at the start of “All The Rowboats” to Spektor imitating a passing parade with her lips on “The Party.” —The Onion A.V. Club

“On “What We Saw From the Cheap Seats,” her fourth major-label studio set, Spektor uses the piano to anchor a succession of far-flung ditties, including the funky, suite-like “Small Town Moon,” the fuzzily percussive “All the Rowboats” and the deeply affecting white-soul ballad “How.” —The Los Angeles Times

STEREOGUM PREMIERES “NESKOWIN” FROM
CORIN TUCKER BAND’S KILL MY BLUES;
WEST COAST TOUR DATES ADDED

NEW ALBUM OUT SEPTEMBER 18 ON KILL ROCK STARS

“Corin Tucker knows how to transmute melancholy into energy, a stubborn belief that what can feel like a trap can also turn into a map to freedom.”—NPR “Fresh Air”

“A punk-rock heroine”—Rolling Stone

The track “Neskowin” from the Corin Tucker Band’s highly anticipated sophomore effort Kill My Blues (out September 18 on Kill Rock Stars) is premiering at Stereogum along with brand new west coast tour dates: http://bit.ly/QUPe6T. The follow-up to the group’s critically acclaimed 2010 release 1,000 Years—an album hailed as “thoughtful [and] subtle” by Pitchfork and “a determined effort” by the Los Angeles TimesKill My Blues finds former Sleater-Kinney frontwoman Tucker returning to her riot grrrl sonic roots along with band members Seth Lorinczi (Golden Bears), Sara Lund (Unwound) and Mike Clark (Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks). Please see below for a track list and complete tour dates; Kill My Blues is available for pre-order now at http://bit.ly/Hh82u0.

Of writing and recording the new album, Tucker notes that Kill My Blues was a group effort. “After the past two years playing together, traveling and making music, I think we’re more comfortable,” she says. “We collaborated on every song on this record and no one was shy about their ideas. I think you can hear that sense of joy and abandon in the songs.”

Best-known for her role in punk rock mainstay Sleater-Kinney, Tucker also played in the influential early-`90s rock group Heavens to Betsy. Recently she has appeared alongside Sleater-Kinney bandmate Carrie Brownstein in the IFC comedy Portlandia. Corin lives with her two children and filmmaker husband Lance Bangs in Portland.

The track is an uplifting blend of the band's distinguished synthpop sound, accentuated by Ivan's distinctive baritone croon.

Love In The Age of War marked the band's their first album release in albums 10 years and features 10 original songs written by Ivan Doroschuk. Produced by Dave “Rave” Ogilvie (Skinny Puppy, Marilyn Manson), Love In The Age of War features charismatic front man Ivan (voice & electronics), his brother Colin Doroschuk (vocals), as well as Lou Dawson (vocals & live keyboards), and James Love (guitars). In 2011, Men Without Hats soared back into the scene with their breakout performance at SXSW, followed by an extensive, well-received North American tour.

Since forming in the late 70's, the band released six studio albums – having songs featured on hit TV series such as Glee, The Simpsons, Futurama and Family Guy. SACRED CAVES RELEASE VIDEO

SACRED CAVES RELEASE VIDEO FOR
"ON THE OUTSIDE" & 2nd SINGLE "SLOMO"

Sanctuarium Available Today, July 31, 2012 on hausKat records
Sacred Caves is pleased to release their video for "On The Outside" directed by Josh Locy. According to Locy, "video was inspired by the title sequence for Silk Stalkings and amazing booty dance videos posted on youtube the song is so great, I just wanted to accentuate the tone and emphasize the beat." The video pays homage to 80s and 90s movie intros: dark, sensual noir. With "On The Outside" the band introduces their sounds to the world, layered and plentiful. The songs ooze lush backbeats and alluring harmonies. Sacred Caves displays a confident ease through their songs; uncomplicated but not actually simplistic. At its core the band plays unashamedly gratifying pop music. These songs were made for headphones. The band has also dropped the 2nd song from the EP, "Slowmo" is a graceful jam with a stout bass-line drowned in electronic beats. Sacred Caves' EP entitled Sanctuarium  is out today July 31st via hausKat records.

When they met at the abandoned Caves of California it had been a while since Greg Bertens and Nyles Lannon had last spoken, let alone gone on a trip together Bertens, the founding member of the band Film School and Lannon, his former songwriting partner/guitarist, having released solo albums as n.Lannon; the two, long lost brothers in arms. They had gone their separate ways what seemed like ages ago, but telecommunications had brought them back with a few messages and a simple suggestion. Strange they would find themselves returning to this once popular destination to rekindle their songwriting partnership and explore these caves.

Today, it's still hard for them to explain what they found in there. Lannon says it was kinetic energy. Bertens says it was a complete idea. But whatever it was they brought it home with them and through emails, FTP and dropboxes--connecting San Francisco to Los Angeles they formed songs. Their building blocks were hallucinatory-like formations of limestone, dolomite, marble, salt and gypsum, pounded together by rhythms and a harmonious pop sense. The tracks are entrancing and melodic, light and easy, deep and heavy, borne from below the earth's crust. They are Poetic in the way they beckon you closer.

Sanctuarium, to be released on hausKat records, is the Sacred Caves' first offering, a mesmerizing EP that channels that mystical and awesome energy sought from something unknown, a deep and deserving release. Expect a full-length album and more to come this fall.

Tracklisting:

01. Slomo
02. Slow This Down
03. On The Outside
04. Diamonds

LAND OBSERVATIONS "ROMAN ROADS IV – XI"

DEBUT ALBUM - ROMAN ROADS IV – XI

RELEASE DATE:  SEPTEMBER 4th, 2012

Mute are pleased to announce the signing of Land Observations, and news of the debut release, Roman Roads IV - XI, out on September 4th, 2012.

Land Observations is the solo project of James Brooks, which debuted at the Short Circuit, presents Mute Festival at the Roundhouse in May 2011.

Brooks’ previous band, Appliance, released four critically acclaimed albums on Mute before disbanding. Since then, Brooks has developed his visual and audio art with various shows across the UK, North America and Europe (his current exhibition, The Information Exchange, is at Domobaal, London, WC1 until August 2012).

Throughout, music has remained a constant, with Brooks now connecting his conceptual approaches to instrumental musical compositions.

Attempts to develop a new project alongside the visual art meant that Brooks did a lot of home recording at his flat in Hackney, East London.

Land Observations, developed out of an interest in the former Roman roads that lay just a short walk from his front door - roads of communication and conquest that stretch from the old City of London and out across parts of Britain, Europe and beyond.

Land Observations witnesses Brooks exploring the power of minimalism via layered, repetitive electric VI string guitar – creating warm, evocative instrumentals.

Although Brooks spent considerable time researching Roman Roads-, with each of the compositions responding to the psychogeography of an individual road - this is not just a historical project, or an attempt to look only into the past. There is an obvious fascination with Roman Roads as man made structures, with their bold lines carving through the landscape, creating an album that's a reflection on the broader ideas of travel, momentum and progress.

Roman Roads IV - XI is released on Mute on CD, vinyl and download, with packaging featuring original drawings by Brooks.

The album was recorded at the Bridge and Tunnel Mobile, Berlin and engineered and mixed by Mark Bihler and James Brooks.

SCARLETT JOHANSSON AND LULU GAINSBOURG COVER

SCARLETT JOHANSSON AND LULU GAINSBOURG COVER SERGE'S
'BONNIE AND CLYDE'

LULU GAINSBOURG'S FROM GAINSBOURG TO LULU DEBUT LP OUT OCT. 30 FEATURING RUFUS  WAINWRIGHT, JOHNNY DEPP + VANESSA PARADIS,
 IGGY POP, AND MORE

Download 'Bonnie and Clyde' at SoundCloud (Available to Post)

Scarlett Johansson has teamed up with Lulu Gainsbourg, son of iconic French artist Serge Gainsbourg and Bambou (actress, model and singer), to release a unique cover of 'Bonnie and Clyde.' The single is the first track to be released in the US from Lulu's tribute album to his father, and will be available via ITunes on July 31st. Slated for an October 30 release with MBM Records, From Gainsbourg to Lulu is a special collection of covers handpicked by Lulu, including collaborations with Rufus Wainwright, Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis, Iggy Pop, and more. Lulu and several guests on the album will perform select shows in NYC this winter.

Born Lucien Gainsbourg, Lulu is the half-brother to world-renowned actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg. He started playing piano when he was five years old and later attended the Music Conservatory of Paris at the age of eight. Accepted into Berklee College in 2007, Lulu composed a song for French singer and actor Marc Lavoine's 2009 album Volume 10 during his term, and assisted Beck who produced his sister's third studio album entitled IRM.
From Gainsbourg to Lulu is a project that he considers as a heartfelt gift to his father. Lulu took it upon himself to select the tracks he knew would best pay homage to his father's work, as well as reach out directly to all of the guest artists himself to bring the album together. Working on the release was a labor of love for Lulu, who acted mainly as a producer/director, skillfully crafting each song with his own influence to compliment the guests. Now a graduate of Berklee, and off the back of a successful release in France to critical acclaim, Lulu is permanently living in New York and ready to spread his new legacy in the US.

Alessi's Ark "Notes from the Treehouse"

Alessi’s Ark to Release 2009 Debut Album, Notes from the Treehouse, for the First Time in North America

Stream the Album Early on Spotify for Inspiration in Album Cover Art Contest

Haw River, NC - July 30, 2012 - Alessi’s Ark, the musical project from British folk-popster Alessi Laurent-Marke, will digitally release her debut album, Notes from the Treehouse, for the first time in North America Sept. 18. The album was only available in the UK after its 2009 EMI/Virgin debut; her most recent effort, Time Travel, was released in September 2011 on Bella Union North America.

Since this isn’t your typical release, the self-proclaimed crafting enthusiast is looking for designers to create an exclusive North American release album cover. Alessi has teamed up with music design contest site, Creative Allies, to host the competition.

It’s hard to create an unreleased album’s cover art without some music for inspiration - which is where Spotify comes in. The site is the exclusive contest partner, and the only place to check out the album in North America before its September digital release. Designers and artist will be able to stream the album in full only on Spotify, helping to inform their design submissions.

After the contest ends, fans will also get a chance to vote on their choices for the winning cover over on Alessi’s Facebook page. The top entries will battle it out for Likes, and both the designers of the fan favorite and Alessi’s pick will win music and swag from Alessi and Bella Union - on top of seeing their artwork at digital retailers.

Notes from the Treehouse was recorded in Omaha, NE when Alessi was only 17 years old. Featuring members of Bright Eyes, infamous producer Mike Mogis was at the helm. Now a seasoned pro, she is working on a follow-up to her last album Time Travel this summer in Athens, Ga. She has toured with Laura Marling, Laura Veirs and Mumford and Sons.

Jesca Hoop "Hospital (Win Your Love)"

(Please post and share!)

Jesca Hoop is getting ready to kick off a west coast tour in support of her new album The House That Jack Built (out now on Bella Union) alongside Jesse Harris. Before she departs, Jesca is sharing the video for album track “Hospital (Win Your Love),” which just premiered on Paste, click HERE to check it out (and feel free to post and share!)  The surreal video, filled with sprinkles lipstick, pigtails and hospital gowns, depicts Hoop as an overgrown child and hospital patient, offering a whimsical take on the pain caused by venturing down memory lane.

“Hospital (Win Your Love)” tackles “a human quality that causes us to crave injury”.  As Jesca explains, “I recall daydreaming as a child about going to the hospital and fantasizing about the way my family would cater to me if I were to come home with a broken arm, or how cool I would look to my peers if i showed up at school with a black eye!”

New album The House That Jack Built has been the recipient of outstanding reviews and is the follow up to 2009’s Hunting My Dress.  The House That Jack Built deftly showcases Jesca’s unflinching tendency to pull focus from widescreen to close-up.  Part siren song, part grim warning, it achieves a perspective-warping balance between the haunting intimacy of Hoop’s delivery and an unconfined air of horizon-scanning grandeur from the outset.
