Gardens & Villa Release New Video; Announce US Tour Dates

Gardens & Villa have shared the new video for their song, "Domino," today. The track is off their latest album, Dunes (out on Secretly Canadian), which has received praise from Pitchfork, SPIN and Stereogum for a sound that Interview Magazine calls, "a quirky hybrid of folk and synthesized ambiance. They dabble in the atmospheric, but gravitate towards bright, catchy melodies."

The video was directed by Robert Beatty, whose hypnotic interpretation of "Domino" effortlessly collates dynamic shapes with 80's-inspired visual elements. An underground musician in his own right (Hair Police, Three Legged Race), Beatty is also a talented multimedia artist, known for crafting vivid cover art for a range of artists (Real Estate, Peaking Lights).

After recently wrapping up an impressive run of shows with Tycho, Gardens & Villa will once again set out on a summer/fall tour, kicking off in Las Vegas on July 23. The band will play a string of North American music festivals, with performances slated at Outside Lands, Music Fest NW, Midpoint Music Festival, Pygmalion, and Fun Fun Fun Fest in the fall. Full tour schedule is below.

METZ share "I'm A Bug" (via Stereogum) + updated 2014 tour dates

Listen to METZ cover of the Urinals
“I’m A Bug” (Stereogum premiere)

Updated 2014 Summer & Fall tour dates

The ever-mighty METZ have dropped a blistering cover of “I’m A Bug,” originally recorded by Southern California punk band the Urinals. Stereogum, who premiered the track had this to say, “I’m A Bug” is one many fine minimalist outbursts by late-’70s SoCal punk trio the Urinals, but there’s nothing minimalist about METZ. The Toronto trio are the latest to cover “I’m A Bug”...and they’ve turned it into one of their patented noise-rock onslaughts with typically bracing results. Which is to say: Like most METZ songs, this thing will squash you. (Like a bug, see?)(see premiere June 30th).”

METZ are hitting the road this week for a North American west coast tour with Cloud Nothings.  The trek kicks-off July 2nd in Portland, OR at Hawthorne Theater and ends on July 8th & 9th with a two-night stand in Los Angeles, CA at the Roxy.  METZ will then head to the UK for a short tour, beginning August 10th in North Yorkshire, UK at Beacon Festival and ending on August 16th in London, UK for ATP's Jabberwocky Festival at ExCel London.

Additionally, METZ has three festival appearances to mention: July 19th in Pemberton, BC at Pemberton Festival; October 4th in Sacramento, CA at TBD Fest; And November 7th-9th in Austin, TX at Fun Fun Fun Fest.  Please find a complete list of tour dates below.

METZ are currently hard at work on the follow up to their critically acclaimed, self-titled Sub Pop debut.

Tricky announces new LP + shares first single

STREAM: "Nicotine Love feat. Francesca Belmonte" - http://youtu.be/PJ2DVq5EOC0
"Calling it Adrian Thaws is saying you don't really know me," says Tricky, explaining the title of his 11th album. "So many times people have tried to put a finger on me and every album I go to a different place."
It's typical of one of music's most unpredictable characters that the first album to bear his birth name is one of his least introspective. Adrian Thaws is a vivid, attention-grabbing set of songs which roam from hip hop to house, jazz to blues, rock to reggae. It was recorded in Tricky's home studio in London, where he's living again after almost two decades in New York, Los Angeles and Paris, and features an international crew of collaborators: Francesca Belmonte, Nneka, Mykki Blanco, Bella Gotti, Tirzah, Blue Daisy and Oh Land. It's designed to be played loud.
"I suppose this is my club/hip hop album," he says. "I've only heard my music a few times in a club but I grew up in clubs from when I was 14: blues parties, hip hop clubs, a few raves.  I'm not known for doing club music but this album has some club tracks on it - well, what I would consider club music."
Tricky makes complicated music because Adrian Thaws has had a complicated life. Born in 1968, he grew up in an extended family that was both black and white, urban and rural, containing strong women and volatile men. His choice of cover versions is revealing. Janet Kay's 1979 lovers rock classic "Silly Games" reminds him of his childhood in Bristol's Knowle West district. London Posse's 1990 track "Gangster Chronicle" harks back to his musical apprenticeship with the Wild Bunch and Massive Attack under the name Tricky Kid before he launched his solo career with 1995's startlingMaxinquaye.
Tricky has always used music to explore the different, sometimes contradictory facets of his background and personality. "I can be anything I want when I do an album," he says. "I could be a woman, I could be a man. It's great to be able to be all these different things."
Adrian Thaws is Tricky's second release on his own False Idols label via !K7, hard on the heels of his 2013 album, also called False Idols. One thing that makes Adrian Thaws such a gripping, commanding album is the prominence of Tricky's own vocals but, as always, he's brought company. Returning from False Idols is Irish-Italian singer Francesca Belmonte, who sings on "Lonnie Listen", "Something in the Way", "I Had a Dream" and new single "Nicotine Love" - Tricky's first full-blown house track. "Fran can take an influence and make it her own," Tricky says approvingly. German-Nigerian singer Nneka, who also sang on False Idols, reappears on the smoky hip hop blues of "Keep Me in Your Shake". "She's really easy to work with," he says. "I wish she was more well known. We need more women like that."

There are new faces too. British grime MC Bella Gotti (formerly known as Nolay) is a dynamically belligerent presence on the two-fisted hip hop tracks "Gangster Chronicle" and "Why Don't You". "Her style is so aggressive," says Tricky. "There's nothing worse than weak hip hop. If I'm going to do it I want it to be intense." American MC Mykki Blanco, who joins Francesca on "Lonnie Listen's" android hip hop, impressed Tricky when he supported him at a show in Germany. "I saw this dude in a mini-skirt and high heels and he was so aggressive on stage. Some of the crowd were like what the fuck? Imagine a big dude with a woman's rage - that's someone who can do some serious damage."

London singer Tirzah, who performs "Silly Games" and ominous opening track "Sun Down" with hints of Martina's deadpan cool, was introduced to Tricky by his daughter Mazy "She called me and said dad will you work with Tirzah. That's my daughter A&Ring me, which is cool as fuck." Mazy also appears on the album as Silver Tongue. Danish singer-songwriter Oh Land duets with Tricky on "Right Here's" rumbling synth-pop. British electronic musician Blue Daisy, who co-wrote and remixed "My Palestine Girl", was another tour bus discovery. "We ended up drinking whisky, smoking weed and listening to music on the bus till five in the morning. I really liked the guy. I said you know what? My new album, come on it."
"My Palestine Girl" is the album's heaviest and most political track. A relationship with a Paris-based Palestinian inspired Tricky to think about the challenges of a relationship with someone who lived in Gaza. "Imagine if the love of your life was there," he says. "It's a political thing to divide and rule. I've been to Israel. The kids I met don't hate Palestinians. It's a political thing."
There's more political drama on "The Unloved", a street-corner revolutionary poem delivered by a friend called AJ. "I don't understand how music has got so lost," says Tricky. "This is what people used to do - speak about politics and society. We're in fucked-up times now. I might not change anything but at least I'm going to have a voice."
The confidence and energy of Adrian Thaws reflects Tricky's newfound sense of stability. After several years of uncertainly changing labels and managers, Tricky finally feels settled with !K7, where he's tidying up a lot of loose ends.
"I've been all over the place for years," he admits. "No discipline. I've just been making a mess and moving on. I can't really blame anybody. It is what it is. But I'm getting my shit together. Now I'm developing as a person my music's getting stronger."
This renewed purpose explains why Adrian Thaws arrives just 16 months after False Idols. There are more projects on the way including a covers record (his first since Nearly God) and Francesca Belmonte's debut album. Tricky has often found it difficult dealing with the music industry but making records is second nature and now there's nothing holding him back.
"Music is easy," he says with a husky laugh. "You've just got to be honest with yourself."
"Nicotine Love" (featuring Francesca Belmonte) is available for immediate download and with pre-orders for the album on iTunes.

Adrian Thaws is out September 8th on False Idols in association with !K7 Records. A 2LP Vinyl Gatefold and Deluxe Hard Case CD edition featuring a two bonus tracks and an exclusive booklet comprising never before seen photos from Tricky's youth is available to pre-order now via the !K7 store, hand signed by the artist.

Wye Oak begin tour, release "Logic of Color" single!

On April 29th, Wye Oak released their fourth studio album, Shriek on Merge Records. The band will now release the single "Logic of Color" which the New York Times described as a "voguish nod to retro synth pop" and Rolling Stone called "triumphant." "When I wrote this song I knew it would be the last track on the record," said lead singer Jenn Wasner. "On the surface, it's probably the most straightforward pop song we've ever made. But it's also a song about people and about the creative process--about trying to capture intangible, ephemeral things for a moment and attempting to make them sit still. It's a beautiful process, but one rooted in loss and impermanence--so I wanted it to sound open-ended, like an unfinished thought."

The band recently performed the track on WNYC Soundcheck. Watch the performance here!

Announcing the return of the legendary Half Japanese. Founded by brothers Jad and David Fair in their bedroom in 1974, Half Japanese is one of the most influential bands of rock history.

Pioneering the DIY and Lo-Fi movements, Half Japanese began recording and self-releasing music in an era of major labels, at a time when it was inconceivable to record music for any reason other than a strictly commercial purpose. They recorded in their bedroom, pressed their own vinyl, and brazenly marketed their music with bizarre magazine ads. Ignoring musical conventions like chords, rhythms, melody, and song structure, Half Japanese organically developed an outsider aesthetic without pretense or ego. Their inner desire to make music led them into uncharted territory, without regard for anyone's expectations other than their own.

Their unique approach resulted in classic albums like "1/2 Gentlemen/Not Beasts" and influenced countless artists such as Sonic Youth, Neutral Milk Hotel, Daniel Johnston, and perhaps most notably, Kurt Cobain (who ranked Half Japanese amongst his top 50 favorites, had them open the "In Utero" tour, and was even wearing their t-shirt when he died).

Having remained silent for over a decade, Half Japanese returns this year with the release of "Overjoyed". Their first album in 13 years, "Overjoyed" shows the band at their most accomplished, aggressive, and (surprisingly) approachable. Produced by John Dieterich of Deerhoof, the 12 songs on "Overjoyed" are unlike anything in the bands catalog, each unapologetically positive and somehow accessible.

Willful ignorance of musical conventions and trends has helped Half Japanese create one of the best albums of their catalog. "Overjoyed" contains a deep purity and earnestness which is exceptionally rare amongst "reunion albums". This is not a band attempting to recreate their old sound (more likely, they're unaware they even have a "sound"). Instead their approach has allowed them to sidestep pitfalls and create something new, interesting, and refreshing.

Grammy and Ivor Novello award winning recording artist Imogen Heap will release her highly anticipated 4th solo album “Sparks” on August 18th, 2014 through her own label Megaphonic Records which is marketed by Absolute.

In parallel with the making of and now release of “Sparks” Imogen is honoured to have been busy curating this year’s Reverb Festival which returns to London’s Iconic Roundhouse in August as part of Bloomberg Summer at the Roundhouse, an annual partnership dedicated to introducing new audiences to innovative culture. Imogen will take to the stage at the festival for her first exclusive performance of “Sparks” in its entirety along with old favourites. The weekend brings us incredible collaborations, interactive installations, inspiring talks and workshops along with visionary music with live performances from Tim Exile, Leafcutter John, London Contemporary Orchestra, Nick Ryan, Peter Gregson, Arve Henriksen, Pekka Kuusisto, Simon Steen Anderson,The London Soundpainting Orchestra, Joby Burgess  and Maja Ratkje with The Norwegian Girls’ Choir.

For the whole month of August leading up to Reverb, Imogen Heap’s Giant Interactive Sonic Playground will be there for people to explore and interact with for free.   Some of the cutting-edge music tech on display at the festival will enable you to watch the speed of sound travel before your very eyes with the beautiful Helmholtz, attach yourself to the building and become a Human Harp  created by Di Maidstone or during the Reverb Festival try your hands at Imogen Heap's Mi.Mu gloves and create music out of thin air!
Imogen has been on a remarkable journey across the globe to make and produce her new album “Sparks”; saying “The album began with someone sending in the sound of a striking match for what became Lifeline in March 2011. I then dived into the most immense, intense creative 2 and a half years of my life that took me all over the planet, collaborating on so many projects with so many people and often totally spontaneously. The album is then in some ways for me grounded with fans’ footprints bringing the finishing touch for the album art, as so many of them came along for the ride.”

While working on “Sparks,” Imogen turned songs into projects and projects into songs to bring her out of her studio and 'let life in' rather than postponing things until her album was done. This fresh approach found Imogen collaborating with everyone from her fans to unsuspecting passers-by, gardeners to filmmakers, scientists to newspaper journalists and brings us her most diverse and daring body of work to date. From the River Thames (You Know Where To Find Me) to 5000 feet up in the Himalayas (Climb to Sakteng, Cycle Song), from her local community garden (Neglected Space) to 6 weeks in the Chinese metropolis of Hangzhou (Xizi She Knows), Heap was soaking it up, writing, developing, recording and producing. Inspired from the sounds of a dishwasher door, a Bhutanese dranyen, and the words of a crumbling wall to 700 fans’ voices, Heap and her brilliant team created and developed the ground-breaking musical gloves over this period (Me The Machine) and dabbled in generative and reactive music (Run-Time) connected to a jogging app. From the deeply personal love songs Propeller Seeds and Entanglement to the crowd sourced response to the Sendai earthquake (Lifeline), her trademark honesty runs through the album.

One of the songs will only be finished once she’s dead! The Listening Chair whizzes us through her first 35 years in 5 minutes and will be added to every 7 years with another minute of a cappella song.

Imogen recently asked her fans to accompany her in completing the final leg of her new album. Those who pre-order the limited edition deluxe box set are asked to send in their footprints which will be used to create the album cover. Designed and developed over the past two years by Imogen and her creative team with CSV (the company behind Radiohead’s special packaging) it will be the very first time that Imogen has released a deluxe package. The submitted footprints will also be a part of a "special ticket” which will be included within the deluxe box set. This ticket is made from a one-of-a-kind blended paper containing various items that Imogen has used in the physical recording of the songs for the album. In addition, the ticket will give fans access to one of the sound checks on her world tour where they will get to meet Imogen in person and see her rehearsing and setting up before the show. To find out more about the deluxe box set and to make a pre-order please visit: http://www.imogenheap.com/deluxeboxset

“Sparks” will be available in two CD formats – a standard edition and a double disc edition with instrumental versions of all tracks. The Deluxe Box set will contain 12 individual CDs, the album on CD, 14 HD music videos, plus videos documenting the making of each song and the entire album, a double 10” vinyl album, a special deck of playing cards which unlock exclusive web content and a 120 page coffee-table-style book telling the story of “Sparks” along with the special ticket of blended items.

The eagerly awaited Sparks world tour will begin at with an extra special one off show at Reverb, however the rest of the tour will be delayed until May 2015 as Imogen will become a mum in November!

In late August 2009, Heap released the critically acclaimed Ellipse (RCA Records) and won the Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album, Non Classical. The album debuted at #5 on the Billboard Top 200, #1 on the Internet Album Chart and #2 on the Digital Album chart.

To follow more news from Heap herself, her much loved vBlogs are back. You can watch them here (YouTube.com/imogenheap) or sign up to her mailing list (http://imogenheap.fanbridge.com) to never miss a beat from the Heap.

We Are the Brave were formed in Sydney, when singer-songwriter/producer Jess Chalker began to collaborate with hip hop producer Ox Why. The multi-instrumentalists found common ground in 70's soft rock, 80's pop, 90's sci-fi, trip hop, and contemporary alterna-pop, which inspired them to create a modern sound that re-imagined all these influences. Hailed as one of this year's most promising acts to emerge out of Australia's fertile indie scene, the duo gained international acclaim and domestic airplay with their self-produced and self-released debut EP,"Noctua", and singles "All Good Things Must Come To An End" and "Sparrow" (with its accompanying MTV Iggy and MTV Buzzworthy-championed video, directed by James Chappell).

They now release another dreamy new track, "Your Ghost", recorded, produced and mixed by We Are The Brave, with Grammy winning engineer William Bowden (the golden ears behind Gotye's "Making Mirrors"album and "Somebody That I Used to Know" single) on mastering duties. An accompanying video (also directed by James Chappell) is forthcoming, and is somewhere between Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse Of The Heart", Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill", Death Becomes Her, and The Crow, featuring stunning scenes shot in secret Sydney locations, as well as the Australian cotton fields. The single precedes the duo's second EP, coming later this year.

"Channeling similar-sounding acts like Florence and the Machine, Bat For
Lashes, and MS MR, the duo's songs expertly ride the line between the past
and the expansive future horizons...we wouldn't be surprised to find them
gaining a foothold right here in the U.S. very, very soon." - MTV Buzzworthy

"...all the hallmarks of a Bat For Lashes or Ladyhawke track...the sound of a mid-eighties classic" -
Your Music Radar

“Jess Chalker and Nathan Cunial interweave the refreshing bluish crush
renowned of Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith with a breezy contemporary
aesthetic to ensure it transcends time” – Dots and Dashes, UK

“Vibes, along with synths and a dreamy guitar, flow right in and out of this
song. It's like a dancing ray of sunshine. “ – on Sparrow (Culture Fires remix).

The Allah-Las @ Summer and Music Fest

Allah-Las play Long Beach's Summer and Music Festival on Saturday, 6/28!

Allah-Las embody quintessential SoCal cool with their effortless charm and hypnotizing guitar jangles. At times, singer Miles Michaud's hazy vocals melt into psychedelic rhythms. Other times, the band allows instrumentals to speak for themselves, painting landscapes of late night desert drives.  Listen to the band's latest single "Had It All" on Brooklyn Vegan here.

“Channeling similar-sounding acts like Florence and the Machine, Bat For Lashes, and MS MR, the duo’s songs expertly ride the line between the past and the expansive future horizons…we wouldn’t be surprised to find them gaining a foothold right here in the U.S. very, very soon.” – MTV Buzzworthy

"All the hallmarks of a Bat For Lashes or Ladyhawke...the sound of a mid-eighties classic" – Your Music Radar

“Vibes, along with synths and a dreamy guitar, flow right in and out of this song. It's like a dancing ray of sunshine. “ – on Sparrow (Culture Fires remix).
Vice’s THUMP

“If you haven't yet heard of Sydney synth pop duo We Are The Brave, then it's time to get acquainted.” – V Music Australia

Sydney synth-pop duo We Are The Brave have shared the video for Rich Morel's Hot Sauce Mix remix of their mesmerizing single “Sparrow” from their recently released Sparrow (The Remixes) EP. The video, which delves deeper into the noir take on a night at an Australian strip club complete with pole dancing duets, was re-cut and expanded by acclaimed Australian video director James Chappell, whose original version was championed by MTV Buzzworthy and MTV Iggy. Watch it HERE.

Sparrow (The Remixes) EP included reworks by Rich Morel, Culture Fires, Nightriders, The Dualists andGnome that embody the song’s dynamic kaleidoscopic sound.  The band recently shared a free download of the exclusive “Sparrow (ATTAR! Remix)”, not included on the commercial release, which premiered onEarmilk.  The Belgian producer’s mix brilliantly reinvents the nostalgic indie-pop anthem into a pumping, sinister and hypnotic late night workout. Download it here!

We Are the Brave were formed in Sydney when Jess Chalker began to collaborate with Ox Why. The multi-instrumentalists found common ground in 70s soft rock, adventurous 80s pop, 90s sci-fi, trip-hop and contemporary alterna-pop and were inspired to create a modern sound that re-imagined their influences. Hailed as one of this year’s most promising acts to emerge out of Australia’s fertile indie scene, the duo gained international acclaim and domestic airplay with their self-produced and self-released debut EP Noctuaand singles “All Good Things Must Come” and “Sparrow”.

The duo will release their new single, the entrancing “Your Ghost”, July 1st on their own 528 Records imprint in advance of their next EP due out later this year. A remix package for single will follow in late July via KID Recordings. Stay tuned!
