At once tender, skewered, sophisticated, and unsettling, Duke of York is a both a journey through the collective minds of Lewis and Karperyd and a substantial representation of their individual talents. While both tackle the sonic side of the outing, Lewis also presents pleasantly paranoid lyrics and Karperyd drapes it all in a distinguished design. This combination presents a substantial study of the sonically impressive and visually inviting, with songs rich in brooding, dark atmosphere and melodic content. The production retains the mood of classic Lewis output while achieving a fresh and radical approach to electronics and studio production with Karperyd. Duke of York is another significant chapter in Lewis's distinguished and uncompromising career and adds to Karperyd's intriguing output. As with the best experimental pop records, Duke of York unfolds with repeated listening, revealing infinite charms. All tracks written, recorded, and mixed by E. G. Lewis and A. Karperyd in Sweden. Mastered and cut by CGB at D&M in Berlin.

(Columbia Records; New York, NY; November 30, 2015)  Critically acclaimed pop duo Chairlift has released new music in the form of their second single, the inspiring, upbeat groove “Romeo.” The track, which follows the much-lauded first single “Ch Ching” was premiered today on Pitchfork and will be available on all digital sales providers starting on December 1st. The lush, swaggering, running-themed single off their forthcoming album Moth will be released both physically and digitally on January 22, 2016 via Columbia Records.

As to “Romeo”, the unique song is based on the Greek myth of Atalanta, a heroine abandoned at birth who becomes an excellent runner: her father hears of her prowess and demands that she return to society to marry, however, she refuses and proudly announces that she'll only marry a man who can beat her in a foot race, and will behead those who lose. After hundreds have been killed and no winner emerges, a suitor named Melanion finally beats her in the race by throwing golden apples into her path to distract her, crossing the finish line first. “Romeo” is essentially told from the point of view of the braggadocio Atalanta, as her last race is about to start; hence the arrogant and aggressive nature.

Producer and multi-instrumentalist Patrick Wimberly describes that while in the nascent stages of “Romeo”, he and Caroline “started building a groove and it felt like a running beat. Caroline wanted the lyrics to stay true to that idea.”

When asked to describe the songwriting of “Romeo,” frontwoman Caroline Polachek recalls, “I started studying opera two years ago, and immediately fell in love with Handel.  I tried to channel that same stately, baroque feeling in the chorus of “Romeo".

Although the single is the second song to be released from Chairlift in three years, the duo – comprised of writer-producers and multi-instrumentalists Caroline Polachek and Patrick Wimberly – has hardly been quiet.  They collaborated with Beyoncé on her groundbreaking self-titled album via the track “No Angel,” which was written and produced by Caroline and co-produced by Patrick.  Caroline released and toured Arcadia, a self-produced solo album under the alias Ramona Lisa and collaborated with SBTRKT, Blood Orange and others, while Patrick produced and collaborated with artists such as Solange Knowles, Wet, Kelela, and Tei Shi.

An evolution from their last album, 2012’s SomethingMoth proves to be an emotionally uninhibited and markedly stronger, more pop inspired body of work. A very New York City inspired album, listeners can expect to be led through an aural mix of big, rich pop inspired hooks, vibrating bass, lively brass and sensuous R&B inspired vocals, all anchored in the duo’s meticulously crafted instrumentation.

"Saturns Pattern' - a compelling statement from the leader of two of the U.K.'s most beloved bands of the past half century, who has, arguably, only gotten better with age." - PAPER Magazine

Roosevelt Hotel Announces a Special Acoustic Performance with Matt Costa

The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel Announces a Special Acoustic Performance with Matt Costa at its Newest Venue, The Garden on December 9

The Garden, the intimate and serene new venue at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, will host a special acoustic performance by singer/songwriter Matt Costa on December 9. The show is free with RSVP.

Tucked away in an oasis of palm trees by the Tropicana Pool, The Garden celebrates traditional beer gardens, but with a Mexican twist. Made possible by Montejo, the bar features an eclectic menu of beer offerings including Spaten Oktoberfest, 10 Barrell Apocalypse and Elysian Night Owl alongside a full menu of tacos. The Garden opened in October 2015, and has quickly been named one of the best new bars in LA by the likes of LA Magazine, Eater LA, Thrillist and more. It was also a popular hangout during AFI festival, Halloween and hosted many special events since opening.

The main bar was built with 90-year old reclaimed wood and 100-year old steel, just a bit older than the hotel itself. These materials were used to craft a bar that modernized a classic design. In addition to a wide selection of beer on tap, The Garden offers a simple menu including Mexican corn, churros and a selection of tacos. Guests can soak up the atmosphere and play games at the bar including life-sized Jenga, ping-pong and beer pong. More weekly programming including tournaments, movie nights and more acoustic performances will be coming soon - watch this space for more.

About Matt Costa
As the year rolls along, the consistent evolution of Matt Costa only becomes more apparent. The artist's process has always been of as much interest to Costa as any end result, and this year Costa is writing, recording, and self-releasing five different EP's, each unique in style, approach and concept. Eucalyptus came in late February, gliding in with its breezy, acoustic fingerpicking; July brought the garage-rock bedroom recordings of Cat Mosta, and the studio-polished Neon Brain followed in early fall. As Costa sees it, the process has been entirely organic-he isn't out to prove anything to anyone, but simply to explore his craft and grow as an artist.

Love’s 1974 Studio Album Reel To Real Out Today

Love’s 1974 Studio Album Reel To Real
Released Digitally & on CD

For First Time Ever Today

Vinyl Copies of the Record Available on
February 19 via High Moon Records

Rich in soulful, unconventional details, masterful singing, crunchy-guitar rock, straight-up Stax-grounded soul, eccentric psychedelia and contemporary funk.” – David Fricke, Rolling Stone

Lee was perfectly at ease stretching the boundaries of his music to encompass the sounds of the world at large.” – NPR Music

Reel To Real captures Arthur Lee and Love at the peak of their rock, funk, and soul powers. Originally recorded and released in 1974 on RSO Records, this beautifully packaged, deluxe reissue features re-mastered audio from the original tapes, a lavish, full-color book with a trove of candid, unpublished photos, and an illuminating essay by Rolling Stone’s David Fricke. Out today, November 27, the album is available digitally and on physical CD via High Moon Records.

What Arthur Lee began on Love’s Black Beauty (released by High Moon Records to wide acclaim in 2013), he brought to fruition on Reel To Real. Armed with a major label budget, and a powerful, intuitive band, he dug deep into the blues, soul, and rock grooves that first inspired him, reaching out to a new audience with his fierce and forward-thinking personal vision.

The album features Arthur’s beloved Black Beauty band: drummer Joe Blocker, guitarist Melvan Whittington, and bassists Sherwood Akuna and Robert Rozelle — who Lee referred to as “cats who can play funky and rock" — augmented by guitar-ace John Sterling and cameo appearances by legendary guitarists Harvey Mandel and “Buzzy” Feiten. To a palette of stinging guitars, explosive brass (arranged by Arthur Lee), deep funk bass and clavinet, splashes of spacey synthesizer, and dream-team female backing vocals, Arthur Lee brought his funkiest and most soulful collection of songs, channeling the most visceral vocal performances he ever committed to tape.

High Moon Records has unearthed 11 revelatory, previously-unreleased tracks from the original sessions, including alternate takes and mixes, live-in-studio rehearsals, and 4 newly-discovered Arthur Lee originals: “Do It Yourself,” “I Gotta Remember,” “Somebody,” and “You Gotta Feel It.” These songs (three fully-produced rockers, and a spare, jaunty, Imagine-era John Lennon, by-way-of Sly Stone studio sketch) were previously unknown to all but their original participants, and present a major addition to Arthur Lee’s catalog.

This ultra-rare bonus material fills out the picture of a fearless, agile and very funky ensemble, led by a masterful singer-songwriter at his feral, exultant best.

Dear Eloise - Uncontrollable, Ice Age Stories

by Passenger Pidgin

Uncontrollable, Ice Age Stories

Dear Eloise's fourth full-length release, signifies a deep freeze in the band's long trek of hazed, ice-glazed world weariness. It's their winter record.
The overarching theme of UIAS is solitude, the icy mirror of memoir. From the very first track, "Apple", it's clear that some once-sweet fruit has turned bitter with age. Promises of new beginnings fade with startling speed, like a dazzling first snow shoved off into gray piles on bleak city sidewalks ("A Brand New World"). Sun Xia's doleful voice recalls faceless lovers, gone in gray dusk light on the first train out of town ("A Man Without Name"). She mourns rootlessness ("Falling Like Leaves"), travels winter paths lined with naked trees, slowly moving away from the hearth ("There is an Invisible Road"). The closest she gets to warm romance is on the C-side closer, "Teenage Girl", in which she taunts her subject, "Your world is so free / Love is in your dreamy beauty" before mocking with the wisdom of the adult lover scorned: "Does the flower you care about blossom? / It's your own ego you're nursing."
Everyone in life is a "Passerby": "There are no real encounters." Just a martial, two-step dirge marking the way past the occasional flash of brilliance ("The Place in White Light"), forever ending in a distant fiction, someone else's sculpture of your own stone-cold facade ("My Far East").
Ultimately, Uncontrollable, Ice Age Stories offers a sober message of hope: after the cold there is still a type of fleeting joy, the "Summer Night Smile" smiled for no one in the somber escape of solitary reflection.

ILOVEMAKONNEN)” from her forthcoming third album 99¢, due out January 22nd via Atlantic Records.  The jubilant duet was produced by Toronto duo Zeds Dead and finds Santigold and ILOVEMAKONNEN playing a couple boasting to each other about their admirers all around the world. "We met Makonnen on the Mad Decent Boat Party last year and knew he could kill this beat,” say Zeds Dead about the track, “He hit us up and said he and Santigold both were jumping on it. We're big fans of hers, so when he brought that back to us it was a no-brainer. The record just came together really naturally and the final cut is something we're all really happy with." The video, directed by Trouble Andrew and Santigold, was filmed at this year’s Made in America festival in Philadelphia and features cameos from A-Trak, Big Sean, De La Soul, DJ Mustard, Earl Sweatshirt, Fabolous, Justine Skye, Meek Mill, Vic Mensa, and moreThe song, along with first single “Can’t Get Enough of Myself (feat. On 99¢, Santigold examines the commercial nature of our world and the ways in which we package ourselves and our lives for consumption. “We have no illusion that we don’t live in this world where everything is packaged. People’s lives, persona, everything, is deliberate, and mediated. It can be dark and haunting and tricky, and freak us out, but it can be also be silly and fun and we can learn to play with it,” she says. She also explores our fascination with perfection and our inherent inability to attain it. The use of playful satire, social critique, and self-examination to explore these themes is reflected in the album’s cover art, a collaboration with photographer Haruhiko Kawaguchi (photographer Hal), finds Santigold shrink-wrapped amongst her cluttered possessions ready for the store shelves.
Following her last album, the dark and cerebral Master of My Make Believe, Santigold wanted to explore new corners of her sound and different ways to convey her vision and political commentary.  She worked with new collaborators Patrik Berger, Rostam Batmanglij, Hit-Boy, HazeBanga, Justin Raisen, Zeds Dead, ILOVEMAKONNEN, andSam Dew and longtime cohorts John Hill, Dave Sitek, and Doc McKinney. The result is the bright and big sound of 99¢ that takes the genre-defying fearlessness Santigold has become known for to new places.
Santigold’s sophomore album, Master of My Make Believe became her first #1 album, topping the Billboard Dance/ Electronic albums chart. She's won an ASCAP Pop Music award (Vanguard Award), and has been nominated for a Q Award, MTV Europe Music Award, and BRIT Award. Her recent brand collaborations include a limited edition make up collection for Smashbox and an accessories collection for Stance. Deerhoof Live Album - Fever 121614 - Out Today

Fever 121614

Out Now on Polyvinyl Records

Deerhoof has made their live album, though they didn't plan on it. Their Japanese label Felicity organized the recording and filming of one stop on their 13-day Japan tour in December. But while the label execs were thinking "legendary band makes classic live-in-Japan concert album," Deerhoof had more tours to do and promptly forgot about it.

When a rough cut of the video appeared in their inboxes a couple months later, they were surprised by what they saw. They'd never seen a video of themselves that really reminded them of what it felt like to play the concert. Their long-time friend Noriko Oishi, who did the edit, was able to simulate the fast-paced communication that's constantly zipping between Satomi, John, Ed and Greg when they're onstage, and she seemed to instinctively zero in all the right moments.

For Greg, who'd been mixing a lot of live Deerhoof to provide "official" audio for various Youtube users posting shows, getting the sound right for the album was a breeze. Just "tell it like it is." Ed had the brainstorm of asking Deerhoof's followers on social media to make manga drawings of the band, to be used in a huge collage. The Japanese label knew they had the classic live-in-Japan album they'd hoped for. Once Deerhoof's U.S. label Polyvinyl saw the video, they knew it was one for the ages and wanted in for their own LP version.

In his Talkhouse review, Spencer Tweedy said it best: "Deerhoof was able to turn me into a shit-grinning, foul-mouthed hard rock fan before the first chorus of the record even started...It’s wound so tight, so energetic, that it sounds like a miracle that it doesn’t snap at any moment...If you ever forget why it is you like to play music, Deerhoof is there to remind you."
Fever 121614 is out today as an official Record Store Day Black Friday selection. The 12 songs, drawn from all over Deerhoof's catalog, appear on the red-vinyl LP and accompanying video download. The gatefold sleeve features a collage of manga drawings by particularly rabid Deerhoof fans.

Also released today, New York violin duo String Noise's The Book of Strange Positions, with its amazing cover version of Deerhoof’s "We Do Parties." Find out more about thathere

"There’s one key adjective to describe Deerhoof live: wild...Fever 121614 captures Deerhoof’s live power, exceptionally well engineered and cavernous...Deerhoof reinvent themselves on every record, yet always remain recognizable — and this record proves that their thrilling musicianship is a large part of that essential core." -CoS

"Like Coltrane shedding the shackles of chord changes on Ascension, Deerhoof shed that of pop music while staying within its reach. There are verses, choruses, bridges and solos, but they take an easy backseat to the sheer energy and thrift to which they are bulldozed over." -The 405

"Deerhoof's 121614 live LP is a must-have this Black Friday." -Exclaim
