Today, Cut Copy shared the official video for "Standing in the Middle of the Field,"the latest single from the album Haiku From Zero. The clip was directed by filmmaker/new media artist Vincenzi Vandella (Justice, Solange, Kirin J Callinan). Born in Russia and now based in Australia, the director's hybrid works span the worlds of music video, virtual reality, experiential and more. View "Standing in the Middle of the Field" on Vevo HERE.
"Vincent is an old friend of the band, having done some of our very first tours together with his own band, The Midnight Juggernauts, but in recent years he's also been working as a filmmaker," says Dan Whitford, Cut Copy's lead singer. "He came to us earlier this year because he'd been experimenting with a strange visual effect having a camera rise upward through various difference scenes and landscapes, almost like delving through a collection of memories. He suggested this experiment might work well when put to our music. We agreed, so he set to work making this new clip for our song 'Standing in the Middle of the Field.'"
"The initial concept was to create a video that was uplifting, in a literal sense," explains Vincenzi Vandella. "We wanted the camera to rise up through various different scenes, telling the story of a couple in one long continuous shot. It would cover the minutia of their everyday intimacy, while also expanding to wider epic vistas, within the one journey. We shot the interior scenes by literally tying a camera to a rope and hoisting it from the ground upwards. Then we filmed a wide assortment of exteriors with a drone, from national parks to inner city lane ways, compositing everything together in post."

Cut Copy will perform on KCRW's "Morning Becomes Eclectic" on Monday, November 6. The band will kick off a North American headline tour in support of Haiku From Zero on November 9 at the Catalyst Club in Santa Cruz, CA. The run includes a November 10 concert at the Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles and a November 24 show at Terminal 5 in New York City. See below for itinerary. "Haiku From Zero and the artwork I generated for the album were inspired by the endless array of information and images that we're surrounded by on a daily basis, particularly the randomness of online images and GIFs," explains Whitford. "They can be absurd, poignant, humorous, frightening, banal, confusing, refined, throwaway - all at the same time. The experiential site takes elements and outtakes from the album artwork and assembles them into a little world to navigate through. You can click through to hear snippets of different songs, and it includes commentary by each of the band members on each track for those that want to know a little more about how we made the album."
Haiku From Zero - Cut Copy's first proper studio album in nearly four years and first for Astralwerks - was produced by Ben Allen (Deerhunter, Animal Collective, Neon Indian). It is the follow-up to 2013's Free Your Mind. NPR Music hailed Haiku From Zero as "magnificently ambitious." "Song by song, the album gathers more and more emotion," said Pitchfork. Under The Radar praised its "chill vibe and dancefloor-ready pop meditations" and AllMusic said, "the album is supremely confident...the songs hit like concentrated bursts of sunny, danceable pop."
SPIN observed, "'Standing in the Middle of the Field,'...builds slowly up from a sort of Congolese-sounding thumb piano loop before reaching stadium-sized liftoff about two-thirds of the way through." Pitchfork noted, "With it, Cut Copy reassert their ability to turn even moody introspection into floor-filler bliss."
Initially a bedroom recording project by Whitford, Cut Copy evolved into a full-fledged band with guitarist Tim Hoey, drummer Mitchell Scott, and bass player Ben Browning. The quartet's studio albums include In Ghost Colours, which Pitchfork named as one of the best albums of 2008 and among the top albums of the 2000s, and 2011's Zonoscope, which won two ARIA Awards and was nominated for a GRAMMY®.
The band's songs have been licensed for use in television, games and commercials, including FIFA 18, Chevrolet, Netflix, Amazon and Levi's® #LiveinLevis campaign. DJing and mixes have also been a big part of Cut Copy's identity - from the band's famed Fabric mix,Fabriclive.29, to the 2014 Melbourne dance compilation, Oceans Apart. In addition to headlining massive sold-out shows, the band has gained prime slots at prestigious festivals such as Coachella, Ultra and Lollapalooza in the U.S.; Primavera in Spain, Pitchfork in Paris; Summer Sonic in Japan; and Big Day Out in Australia.
